Verizon 1 hop traceroute3/31/2023 I can vouch for the fact there there are absolutely no other causes internet traffic/latency spikes. After doing a few trace route tests, I found that the issue lies with my connection to my ISP (Verizon Wireless). Since Windows tracert can't be changed to use UDP, Windows users need to use a tool like PingPlotter that lets you select UDP or ICMP. No matter the destination, it always shows upstream gateway as the final hop. Linux and Mac trace route uses UDP by default (and can be changed to ICMP.) FiOS's network handles ICMP packets differently then UDP packets. While most times it is well under 5ms, it spikes as high as 1000+ ms. I noticed that Verizon is now intercepting and breaking traceroute (on Windows) and mtr. This isn't always the case, and it depends on what role. Sometimes a hop is counted when a packet passes through other hardware on a network, like switches, access points, and repeaters.
